Box Office: Paul Feig's mystery dramedy was produced for a sensibly slender $20 million, and has tripled its price tag already. A solid minor hit for Lionsgate, and a successful rebound for Feig following 2016's Ghostbusters debacle.
Verdict: If you can get over the fact that Feig's new film feels like several different tonally diverse projects smashed together, this demented comic thriller is a whole lot of fun.
Blake Lively gives easily the best performance of her career to date as a beautiful enigma of a woman who runs circles around Anna Kendrick's more bookish goof of a single mother. Their chemistry together is terrific, and largely allows the film to succeed despite its outrageous level of absurdity.
You can argue it piles too many plot twists on top of one another in the final stretch, but for the most part it manages to be both hilarious and legitimately unsettling at times. The tone's messy as hell, but it basically works.
