Box Office: Eli Roth's $42 million foray into family fare opened above expectations and has recouped its budget after two weekends on release. It won't be a significant hit by any means, but it'll turn a profit, especially with home video factored in.

Verdict: Roth's undeniably bizarre shift into PG territory is more successful than not thanks to game performances from Jack Black and especially Cate Blanchett, though it also never really does anything particularly unique or interesting script-wise.

The lavish production design and solid effects sustain enough interest, but it ultimately feels like things should've gotten far wackier and more outlandish than they ever did.

Not bad for a Sunday afternoon at the movies, but this could've been so much more.
