Ranking Taika Waititi Films From Worst To Best

3. Thor: Ragnarok

Thor Taika Waititi
Marvel Studios

How do you completely reinvent a character who has appeared in four previous films? You hire Taika Waititi.

Thor: Ragnarok stands out in a sea of Marvel Studios films as one the funniest and most enjoyable of the bunch. The third Thor film brings new life to a character who was often struggling to find his own identity within his solo outings, and that is all thanks to Waititi.

The director imbues his signature comedy into the Thor franchise, but in particular into the Asgardian god himself, allowing Chris Hemsworth to stretch his comedic muscles in ways he hadn't previously had a chance to do. The result is the best representation of Thor we've received on the big screen yet.

After his secret sister Hela returns to take over Asgard, Thor must team with Bruce Banner, Loki and newcomer Valkyrie to save the day. This all sounds pretty standard, yet Waititi cleverly weaves in themes of expectation and self doubt that make the film substantive rather than just a popcorn flick. Taking away narrative crutches like Thor's hammer was a genius choice, and the lack of a romantic subplot is a nice change to traditional Marvel outings.

With Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi has shown it doesn't matter the budget or subject matter - he can make an engaging, hilarious thrillride no matter what.
