Ranking Taika Waititi Films From Worst To Best
2. Jojo Rabbit
Taika Waititi is known for walking the fine line between comedy and emotional resonance, and no better example of that is Jojo Rabbit.
This 2019 film follows young Jojo, a Nazi fanatic in 1940s Germany whose best friend is an imaginary Adolf Hitler. Give who his bestest pal is, things become complicated for Jojo when he discovers that his mother has been harbouring a Jewish girl in their house.
The subject matter is of obviously incredibly difficult to navigate, but Waititi does so seamlessly. Jojo Rabbit is witty and wry when it wants to be, but it also knows exactly when to get serious. Waititi never feels like he's mocking anyone that shouldn't be mocked, and he isn't insensitive in the slightest.
Don't be mislead just because Hitler is a prominent character, this is a film about kindness and human goodness.
Jojo Rabbit's stellar cast includes scene-stealing performances from Scarlett Johannsen, Sam Rockwell and, of course, Taika Waititi as the perfect parody of Hitler. However, it is Roman Griffin Davis as the titular Jojo who needs singling out for special praise. Without Davis, the film falls apart and he gives one of the best young performances of recent years.
Waititi's Jojo Rabbit is an exceptional feat of filmmaking, pulling off an idea that should never have worked - let alone as well as this!
