Ranking: The Biggest Protagonists From 2016's Summer Blockbusters
7. Magneto (Michael Fassbender) - X-Men: Apocalypse
The Role: The mighty superhero who, since the events of the last film, has retired to Poland, abandoned his powers, taken a regular job and started a family. That naturally doesn't last long (of course).
Michael Fassbender is no doubt terrific as the character, though he's given a disappointingly cliched, predictable treatment here.
The whole "retired into the woods with a family" shtick has been done to death, and as soon as the audience sees him living the quiet life, they know it's going to be destroyed soon enough. Then there's Apocalypse bending Magneto to his will, which just rehashes the usual formula of him doing some very bad things and then it all being forgiven by the end of the movie.
Apocalypse (both character and movie) just didn't do much interesting with Magneto, and didn't even capitalise on the opportunity to have Quicksilver tell him that he's his son. Given that Magneto just lost his family, this could've been a potent emotional beat for the character. Sadly, no dice.
