4. Peter Quill/Star-Lord - Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

Though the second Guardians of the Galaxy didn't quite reach the fresh highs of the original, it nevertheless continued to develop Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) as an intriguingly nuanced and troubled superhero.

With a totally unique spin on classic daddy issue cliches, Peter thinks he's found some measure of peace by meeting his father Ego (Kurt Russell), but of course, it's all just a ruse to further his own selfish ends, and ultimately Peter was probably better off never meeting him.

In addition to having to annihilate his biological father, Peter has to deal with the trauma of losing the dad who raised him, Yondu (Michael Rooker), and learn the truth about his mother's death.

These moments add a ton of shading to a character who could so easily be a rather cartoonish Marvel superhero, and hopefully James Gunn will continue to develop him in this stead in Vol. 3.
