Ranking: The Biggest Protagonists From 2017's Summer Blockbusters

17. Nick Morton - The Mummy

The Mummy Tom Cruise
Universal

If you thought Tom Cruise was wildly miscast as Jack Reacher, he feels even less-appropriate as Army douche Nick Morton, considering that his strengths lie in playing the gung-ho hero against the odds, not an arrogant, reckless loot hunter.

It doesn't help that there's absolutely nothing to the character beyond the most base, template-driven action hero stylings, giving Cruise almost nothing to work with.

The idea that Nick himself gains supernatural powers is an interesting one, sure, but it ends up more accidentally comical than genuinely bada**.

Worst of all, considering that Morton is clearly intended to be the Tony Stark of the upcoming Dark Universe, he lacks the likability or depth of character on which to hang such a cinematic enterprise. Casting Cruise and just hoping for the best really isn't good enough.
