Ranking: The Biggest Protagonists From 2017's Summer Blockbusters
12. Tommy - Dunkirk
It's fair to say that Christoper Nolan's visceral war film is inherently disadvantaged in the protagonist stakes considering that it's an ensemble-driven movie with only the most scarcely-defined central character, all the more so considering that he has only a few lines throughout the film.
Even so, Fionn Whitehead gives a thoroughly compelling performance as young soldier Tommy, often more through facial expressions and how he physically carries himself than what he says, and is an effortlessly empathetic character, caught in the most dangerous and terrifying of scenarios.
He's by no means a classic Nolan hero and, again, is majorly disadvantaged by the movie's spare approach, but to call him an empty vessel would be to miss the point entirely.
