Ranking: The Biggest Protagonists From 2017's Summer Blockbusters

11. Gru - Despicable Me 3

While Despicable Me 3 was a boilerplate animated sequel in many senses, Steve Carell nevertheless gave another effortlessly entertaining performance as Gru, who now faces off against 80s-obsessed baddie Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker) while learning that he has a long-lost twin brother, Dru (also voiced by Carell, of course).

Carell has the role down pat at this point, and while the film hardly moves Gru into any particularly bold or imaginative new places, he's still a deliciously mischievous kinda-hero with just enough edge to satisfy.

Thankfully, despite their own movie being such a monstrous success in 2015, the minions didn't steal the film away from Gru and make him a supporting character in his own adventure.
