Ranking The Bourne Movie Franchise From Worst To Best

1. The Bourne Ultimatum

Even without Brian Cox's great villain (replaced here by David Strathairn's identikit but inferior bad guy), Ultimatum is undoubtedly the best movie of the series. It is a culmination, not only in story, but also in style and it feels - even in hindsight - like the right ending point to the original trilogy.

It is a more intelligent film than its predecessors, having learnt the emotional lessons of Supremacy and honed the action of both of the first two films. It's finely tuned, thrilling and packs a murky undercurrent that makes sure that the surface level action has heft.

There's no tight resolution, but given the context that Ultimatum was released to, that sort of "happy ending" wouldn't have been appropriate or satisfying. It might not have been an easy decision, but it was the right one to keep him out there somewhere.
