One of the Coen Brothers’ more recent outings, Hail, Caesar! is the story of a Hollywood studio ‘fixer’ tasked with hunting down the studio's big name star after he has been kidnapped by communists.

The film features many moments rife with the Coen Brothers’ signature wit (the first meeting of the Communists for example is lathered in classic Coen dialogue) and some fantastic performances from the likes of Josh Brolin and Alden Ehrenreich, but the film falls a bit flat in comparison to much of the Coen Brothers high quality back catalogue.

The great moments in the film seem few and far between and much of the rest of the film seems like various scenes tenuously linked together for the sake of a narrative. Hail, Caesar! is, during its best moments, a very good Coen brothers film but those moments are just too sparse throughout. It borders on non-sensical at points unfortunately.

The idea of the film, and the message about Hollywood as a whole, give the films some very redeeming qualities but it sadly just doesn’t hold up to the Coen Brothers exceptionally high bar.
