Ranking The Howling Movies Worst To Best
3. The Howling VI: The Freaks (1991)
Howling VI: The Freaks introduces us to Ian, a mysterious British drifter that also happens to be a werewolf. He rolls into a desolate California desert town at the same time as a carnival, run by the villainous Harker, who captures the young man for use in his freak show.
Howling VI has so many interesting elements at play, chief among them the sympathetic werewolf trait also seen in the previously mentioned Reborn. The difference here being Brendan Hughes tormented performance sells this trait so much better. Out of make-up he is a hard working every man and when he transforms we see him battle with his wolf urges.
The film also has some eye-grabbing special effects as each one of the titular "freaks" has their own unique trait. We see extra arms, a lizard man and a bearded lady to name just a few. All of this adds to the already rather unsettling atmosphere the close-knit desert town already provides.
Although no longer based on Gary Brandner's literary trilogy, The Freaks actually shares quite a few plot similarities with the book The Howling III: Echoes. Both feature a young man with lycanthropic abilities caged by a carnival freak show.
Into this atmospheric melting pot, Howling VI also reveals the villainous Harker is actually a vampire! It is so bizarre, but the flawless make-up and the resultant vampire-wolf battle make it work.
