9. 2013: The Conjuring
On its surface, there's nothing in James Wan's The Conjuring that hasn't been done a million times before. In its execution, though, it soars as a possession horror packed with scares (clap clap) that overcome its slightly overdone story.
The first of a great franchise, the film follows demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson) as they race to save a family from possession.
With compelling performances, inspired practical effects and an old-school reliance of classic jump scares, The Conjuring is a firm reminder of just how fantastic a filmmaker James Wan is.
