Ranking What Was Really The Best Horror Movie Every Year 1990-2021
8. 2014: The Babadook
"If it's in a word, or it's in a look, you can't get rid of the Babadook."
After reading an admittedly creepy storybook about a creature called the Babadook, young Sam (Noah Wiseman) becomes convinced the monster is lurking in his house, which sends his mother (Essie Davies) into a state of growing paranoia.
Equally a psychological thriller, haunted house horror and bedtime story come alive, The Babadook is brilliantly filmed and provocative, and is so traumatically terrifying that even The Exorcist's William Friedkin called it scariest film he'd ever seen. Praise indeed.
