3. The Magic Roundabout (2005)
Updates of classic TV shows are always going to be contentious, but this CGI re-do of the much-beloved British TV series
The Magic Roundabout really tested the patience of just about everyone when it was released. Winstone, Ian McKellen and Jim Broadbent are just about the best-respected names on the cast list - playing opposite the likes of Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams - but they're saddled with a wafer-thin script which disgraces the fantastic characters at the center with far too many pop-culture references in a lame attempt to seem current, and a plot that's forgotten pretty much the second the film finishes. Winstone is oddly, even poorly cast in the film, given his inexperience in these sort of roles, and the inescapable feeling that he just wants to drop an F-bomb or beat somebody up in the sound booth. Hearing him rip through the terrible lines written for him is a depressing experience, but thankfully this is only a fleeting blemish on the actor's CV, and one can hardly say he wasted a lot of time getting it in the can.
