Ready Player One: 135 Easter Eggs & References Explained
Video Games
There aren't quite as many references to the world of video games as there are to movies, but given that the final quest for the third key involves playing a video game a very special way, it's inevitable that there are other nods in there...
24. Minecraft
Right at the opening of the film - the first time we head into The OASIS in fact - we're dropped into Mincraft world, which is an early indication of how amazingly detailed the effects work is in the movie.
23. Dungeons & Dragons
This being an absolute geek haven, Dungeons & Dragons inevitably gets a mention. Specifically, it's the creator Gary Gygax himself who is referenced as well as given a nod in the form of The Orb of Osuvox, which Sorrento uses to create a forcefield around the third task.
The design of the Orb has a 20 sided die in the middle of it in reference to Dungeons & Dragons gameplay.
The keys being named as they are - Copper, Jade and Crystal seems to have also been borrowed from D & D's naming convention for the Orbs Of Dragonkind.
22. Goldeneye
The classic multiplayer James Bond game is specifically mentioned as Halliday's favourite game, with the specific mention that his preferred game mode was Slappers only (a mode that removed guns and had the players slapping each other to death).
21. Halo
If you look closely enough at the starting grid for the first task's race, you'll see Master Chief as one of the avatars waiting around to start the race. And as the final battle kicks off, we get to see a group of Spartan soldiers joining the fight. Their weapons are also used by other avatars throughout the battle, including Parzival using the SPNKR rocket launcher.
20. Turbo
Parzival reveals that Halliday's favourite game was SEGA's 1981 arcade racer Turbo.
