Ready Player One Trailer Explained: 10 Things We Learned

9. Parzival And Art3mis Meet In The Flesh A Whole Lot Sooner

Ready Player One
Warner Bros.

While Ready Player One primarily centres on the hunt for James Halliday's Easter Egg - the hidden treasure left by the late creator of the OASIS, which will grant the finder Halliday's fortune and control of the game universe - a key subplot in Cline's novel is the relationship between Parzival and Art3mis, another 'gunter' (i.e. egg hunter) with whom Wade finds himself falling in love, despite them never having met in person.

However - mild spoilers coming up - in the novel, Wade and Art3mis's alter-ego Samantha do not meet face-to-face until the very last pages, and when they do meet, it transpires Samantha is ashamed of her appearance due to a large facial birthmark.

The romance was one of the most heavily criticised elements of the novel, and it seems this criticism has not gone unheeded, as Art3mis/Samantha (as portrayed by Olivia Cooke) would appear to have undergone some significant changes.

Firstly, we note there's no birthmark; secondly, she and Wade look to be meeting in person considerably earlier, and when they do she seems to be a lot more clued-up on things than Wade does.

Which brings us to another key deviation from the novel which this trailer alludes to...
