It's truly a sign of how suddenly and unexpected the M3GAN franchise imploded that the recently released spin-off Soulm8te already feels like it's far too late to the party.
Though this erotic thriller adjunct from the main horror-comedy franchise was shot back in late 2024, it spent almost two years on the shelf as Universal figured out what to do with it following poor test screenings and M3GAN 2.0 becoming a surprise flop at the box office last summer.
Soulm8te ended up being dumped straight to streaming, and despite clearly being sent out to die, it's really not that bad, in large part thanks to Lily Sullivan's excellent performance as murderous android Sara.
But the film also can't help but feel like a bit of an afterthought - a franchise cul-de-sac from which nothing new will spawn.
This, combined with how straight-forward a story it is, offers little reason to go back for seconds.
