Resident Evil Movie Reboot: 10 Things It MUST Get Right

9. Make Claire Redfield the focus

Much of the cast of the movie has already been announced and is shaping up to be a pretty talented bunch. Whilst the film will certainly be an ensemble movie, even ensembles tend to have a lead character. This is the character whose arc drives the story and with whom the audience can most closely relate. In the new Resident Evil movie, this character should be Claire Redfield.

Claire is a student who comes to Raccoon City to search for her missing brother. Unlike other characters in this universe she is not a cop, a government agent or a top secret spy. She is an ordinary young woman driven by a desire to uncover the truth about what happened to her brother.

This gives a plausible excuse to why Claire continues to press on in her investigation of the town instead of just turning and running. It also provides an excellent narrative framework through which to build the mystery of the Mansion Incident, with Claire uncovering clues as she goes. Presuming the movie will also feature Sherry Birkin it is likely that we will see a Ripley-Newt-esque dynamic between the two.

Leon is great and certainly a fan favourite in the videogames, but as a narrative driver Claire Redfield is the much better choice. She’s being portrayed by Kaya Scodelario who has lent her talent to many franchises over the years and will be a perfect fit to head up this cast.
