Robocop: The Evolution Of Paul Verhoeven's Classic In 7 Trailers
7. Robocop (1987)
The original and the best. Rant and rave all you want about unnecessary reboots but no matter how good or bad a modern 're imagining' of a classic movie turns out to be it absolutely does not take anything away from the original. If Robocop 2014 was pink with yellow spots people would just say "Watch the original instead". The Evil Dead remake was great but did it overshadow ANY of the original Sam Raimi efforts? And what abut Police Academy? If someone announced they were rebooting that old chestnut I'm sure fans would kick up a stink saying "But the originals were classics of the genre", yes but the rest were sh*t! It's just one of those arguments that will never go away. With that in mind it's easy to see even from the trailer exactly why people hold the 1987 original in such high regard. OK, so using the theme from The Terminator may have been ill advised and several key plot twists are given away but the exciting action sequences, the explosions, the violence and the sheer inhuman mechanoid-like main character was like nothing we'd ever seen before. By today's standards the trailer is poor but the film was fantastic. A true genre classic and without a doubt the finest hour to date for officer Alex Murphy.
