Russell Crowe: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 That Sucked
3. Robin Longstride - Robin Hood
Reuniting Ridley Scott and Crowe, Robin Hood is like Gladiator, but with Nottingham swapped for Rome. Well, sort of.
Its got all the sheen of a gritty prestige action picture, but none of the charm. And just as Gladiator thrived off of Crowes arc, here its riches are stolen by the actors weakness. His accent is all over the British Isles. In fact, all of the English speaking world, with shades of Irish, Scottish, Geordie, Cornish, Australian, everything except the midlands, really.
Everything else about the role fits what Scott was going for - theres no tights and not much merriment, but what we get does fit Robin Hood. Its just not enough to save an already iffy film.
The movie was originally going to have Crowe play both the Sheriff and Robin Hood, which sounds so much cooler at first, but when you look at what he did here probably wouldnt have been much better.
