Ryan Reynolds: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Will Hayes - Definitely, Maybe

Definitely, Maybe is a small scale rom com with some big, genre tilting ideas: instead of a "boy meets girl, they both live happily ever after tale, this film instead focuses on a man recounting to his daughter how he met his wife and her mother, on the eve of them divorcing. It's a shrewd tale that, thanks to director, Adam Brooks, breathes life into the flashback way of telling a story, with the script moving in a direction that is always pleasantly surprising. At the centre of this not as sombre as it sounds tale is Reynolds. Not so much playing against type as he is playing a new type of romantic lead, the actor is on good form by busting out that now trademark charm we're so used to, while at the same time throwing in a little bit of Working Girl era Harrison Ford gruffness for good measure. It's a belting film and easily Reynolds's best performance in the genre.
