5. The Opening Song Doesn't Work

Sausage Party opens on a pretty bum note (pun semi-intended), with a song that I presume was intended to send up classic Disney musicals, but falls flat on its face because, unlike the animation, it's a pale imitation. It's not a catchy number like The LEGO Movie's Everything Is Awesome - I've forgotten it only twelve hours later - and, even if it was, due to poor sound mixing you can barely make out the lyrics.

So while the idea of a R-rated kids' animation may have you grinning as the movie opens, you're then affronted with a rather bland first few minutes (there's one Hitler joke that gets an outraged laugh, but that's it), which sets the tone for the confused things to come.

Things are made more problematic when the song becomes a semi-important plot point later on; if it's not sunk it, it's hard for it to have any proper effect.
