This brutally uncompromising, savagely mean-spirited folk horror is smart to keep the particulars of its central lore somewhat vague, but it nevertheless digs deep into the truly dangerous potential of unchecked grief - a scariest of things we can all relate to in some fashion.
Sally Hawkins gives an Oscar-worthy performance as Laura, a grieving mother who wishes to bring her late daughter back to life by any means necessary, and it's her deeply human drive to do this which proves most unsettling of all.
We can relate to Laura's heartbreak even if her plan to invoke a cult ritual to resurrect her child is completely terrifyingly bonkers, ensuring that even in its wildest moments, there's a still a strong tether to the very human feelings compelling the villain's actions.
