With Jaws, one of the most iconic horror films of all time, came a devastating antagonist that genuinely affected the holiday trade when it released, and yet, some of the most effective moments were when the beast wasn't even visible. Take the second attack as a prime example of this.

There are plenty of horror moments that were scary at the time and have lost some of their impact over years and decades, but this is not one of them, thanks to how Steven Spielberg created the tension. It is not what you see so much as the anticipation of what is bound to come. It is timelessly unaffected by now-out-of-date practical or CGI effects.

The shark had already attacked Amity Island once the previous night, and while most of the people on the beach were blissfully ignorant on the next sun-soaked day, the audience had to bear the burden of knowing something was coming. 

It is a perfect, nail-biting, anxiety-inducing scene. The false starts, the perfect innocence of people playing on the beach and in the water with the leviathan looming unseen until the attack, at which point the shark is still not seen clearly, but instead is merely hinted at by the flailing boy and his spilt blood.
