2. The Opening Scenes - 28 Weeks Later
As far as disappointing sequels go, 28 Weeks Later has to be up there with some of the worst. Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later was an outstanding piece, while 28 Weeks had an inflated budget just to lose any kind of charm or familiarity compared to its predecessor.
However, this wasn't immediately apparent. The opening to the 2007 sequel is arguably one of the most intense horror movie openings of all time. It set a tone that the rest of the picture simply couldn't live up to, but there can be no taking away from such a breathtaking start.
This is how you open a zombie film. The quiet, hidden family trying to get by, before an argument breaks out that is quickly overshadowed by the attacking infected. Understated conflict turns into all-out, adrenaline-pumping chaos.
The nightmare fuel is poured onto the fire with the breach of the house in a frantic and futile fight for safety, ultimately leading to the heinous actions of Don (Robert Carlisle), as he left his wife behind to be eaten, and the incredible race across the field to the boat. It's just a damn shame the rest of the movie couldn't even come close to matching the pace set out of the gate.
