Scream VI Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

1. The Stressful, Suspenseful Set-Pieces

Where Scream VI succeeds best is with the strength of its numerous suspense set-pieces, several of which rank among the finest of the entire series.

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett feel far more assured behind the director's chair this time, and put their larger budget to good use with a number of elaborate, gut-wrenching sequences fans won't soon forget.

The bodega and ladder sequences featured extensively throughout the trailers are terrifically entertaining, as is Gale's nerve-wracking penthouse showdown with Ghostface, ensuring that for all of its narrative problems, Scream VI at least brings the tension in stressful spades.

If the filmmakers indeed return for Scream 7, as one suspects they might, they'll need to go some to one-up this movie's thrilling creativity where its various attacks, chases, and escapes are concerned.
