Scum of the Earth - 7 Herschell Gordon Lewis Films

4. Blood Feast (1963)

18.02.2013bloodfeast The first film directed by H G Lewis, Blood Feast is a rather dopey, flimsy caper, only really notable for its OTT gore scenes. An Egyptian caterer is going around killing women for their body parts so he can come up with some sort of sacrifice to the Egyptian Goddess Ishtar. Bloody highlights include: limbs chopped off in the bath, tongue ripped out, brains stolen - until the murderer gets his comeuppance - crushed to death in a garbage truck - "He died a fitting end, just like the garbage he was" opines one of the survivors. It would be good fun to get into the Tardis and travel back to 1963 to see the reaction this film engendered in the audiences who watched it. They would definitely not be used to such a spectacle and John Waters' apocryphal tale of teenagersnn jumping out of the car to vomit whilst watching Blood Feast is likely to be right on the mark. Heck, the damn thing ended up on the Video Nasty list 20 years after it was made! Seedy, grimy, nasty like all of H G Lewis' work (he didn't do romantic comedies), Blood Feast is terribly acted, horribly directed, badly produced and based on a silly premise. But it still has the power to mesmerise the viewer due to its hard core gore. Gore never gets old. Hehehe.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
