Sean Bean: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Danny Bryant - Outlaw (2007)

2007 was not a good year for Bean and this gruesome vigilante film glorifying violence and running an incredibly fine with being openly racist is just about as bad as it gets for him. It's a vile film pandering to the lowest common dominator, promoting the worst elements of our society while at the same time preaching a message that the characters are trying to save that very same society. As such, Bean plays a paratrooper whose wife has cheated on him upon his return from service, and of course the only reasonable reaction is to form a vigilante group and go around taking out whoever they like. Bean's performance is not heroic, as it may have been intended, but is wholly repulsive. It is such a shame that Bean associated himself with the project, although it comes across that he feels the same as he spouts nonsensically about a government that doesn't do anything for him. What could have been an interesting look at a vile, perhaps misunderstood, character who feels alienated by society (a la Taxi Driver), is contrived to be a performance where all you can do is cheer for a thug who has few redeeming qualities.
