Sean Bean's 10 Greatest Deaths

3. Game Of Thrones (2011)

nedstark Those familiar with A Song Of Ice And Fire, the literary series that HBO€™s Game of Thrones is based upon, knew from the start. Those unfamiliar with the source material, however, would not have bet that the series€™ main character, who had been the centrepiece of nearly all of the show€™s promotional materials, would meet an untimely demise just nine episodes in, regardless of the fact that Sean Bean was portraying him. That character was Eddard €˜Ned€™ Stark, the patriarch of the Starks of Winterfell (and de facto hero of the story), who becomes the right-hand-man of his childhood friend King Robert (who he helped to win the throne in a rebellion) after the previous holder of the position, their foster father Jon Arryn, dies in suspicious circumstances. It is a job he does not want, but one he reluctantly takes, discovering during the investigation of his predecessor€™s death that Robert€™s wife and queen, Cersei of House Lannister, is in an incestuous relationship with her twin brother Jaime, who is the true father of Robert€™s three supposed children. After foolishly offering Cersei the chance to leave the capital with her honour intact, she and her family orchestrate Robert€™s death, prompting Ned€™s arrest when he proclaims the illegitimacy of Joffrey, the supposed heir to the throne. A sadistic individual, Joffrey opts to ignore the advice of his family and advisors, ordering Ned€™s public beheading (in front of his daughters, no less) to satisfy his own lust for violence and torment.
