3. Game Of Thrones (2011)
Those familiar with A Song Of Ice And Fire, the literary series that HBOs Game of Thrones is based upon, knew from the start. Those unfamiliar with the source material, however, would not have bet that the series main character, who had been the centrepiece of nearly all of the shows promotional materials, would meet an untimely demise just nine episodes in, regardless of the fact that Sean Bean was portraying him. That character was Eddard Ned Stark, the patriarch of the Starks of Winterfell (and de facto hero of the story), who becomes the right-hand-man of his childhood friend King Robert (who he helped to win the throne in a rebellion) after the previous holder of the position, their foster father Jon Arryn, dies in suspicious circumstances. It is a job he does not want, but one he reluctantly takes, discovering during the investigation of his predecessors death that Roberts wife and queen, Cersei of House Lannister, is in an incestuous relationship with her twin brother Jaime, who is the true father of Roberts three supposed children. After foolishly offering Cersei the chance to leave the capital with her honour intact, she and her family orchestrate Roberts death, prompting Neds arrest when he proclaims the illegitimacy of Joffrey, the supposed heir to the throne. A sadistic individual, Joffrey opts to ignore the advice of his family and advisors, ordering Neds public beheading (in front of his daughters, no less) to satisfy his own lust for violence and torment.
