20 Secret Movie Sub-Plots You Didn't Notice
12. Rewriting History - Watchmen (2009)
Pick any moment from the haunting opening montage of Zack Snyder's brilliant Watchmen adaptation and you'll find a wealth of untapped narrative potential.
Set to Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'", Watchmen's opening takes audiences through a host of historical events that have been rewritten by a world populated by outlawed superheroes, such as the assassination of JFK, which is seen perpetrated by The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and the re-election of President Nixon.
Perhaps the most amusing and subtle shot from the montage though comes mid-way through, when the original Nite Owl is seen saving a well-dressed couple from a mugger outside an opera house, paying homage to Batman's famous origin story... and suggesting that in this world, Bruce Wayne never became the Caped Crusader.
Snyder confirmed the comic book nod a few years back, and say what you will about his work as a director, this is a very fun gag.
