Shang-Chi and Katy are then captured by his father Wenwu, who discusses his own past and goes on to explain that his mythology was at one point appropriated by an American terrorist.

Wenwu is talking, of course, about Iron Man 3's Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), who he decries for co-opting his legend of the Ten Rings and inventing his own name for its leader, The Mandarin, because he didn't know Wenwu's actual name.

In the most scathing put-down, he adds, "He gave his figurehead the name of a chicken dish, and it worked. America was terrified... of an orange."

This was the final step in the MCU's gradual "retconning" of Iron Man 3's divisive Mandarin debacle - now we have a "real" Mandarin who doesn't go by that problematic name, yet without wiping Killian's fictionalised creation, played by Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), off the map.
