Sherlock Holmes 3: Everything You Need To Know

3. It's Up Against Avatar 2 At The Box-Office

Sherlock Holmes Avatar
20th Century Fox

The first Sherlock Holmes movie launched on Christmas Day 2009, a week or so after James Cameron's sci-fi phenomenon Avatar premiered.

Both would go on to enjoy enormous box-office success (Avatar pretty much ruled cinemas until April 2010), so it's rather fitting that 11 years after their initial showdown, the two properties are set to face each other once again.

With Sherlock Holmes 3 dated for 25 December 2020, the threequel will open with the same set of circumstances as the original: one week after an Avatar movie.

This time it's Avatar 2, the first of many, many, many, many, many Avatar sequels. It's highly unlikely that this first sequel will perform as well as the original did (Avatar made $2.7 billion worldwide but isn't really a beloved property nowadays), but it'll surely pass the $1 billion mark with little trouble.

As for Sherlock Holmes 3, expectations will be a lot lower than that; if it can crack the $500 million worldwide mark (like its predecessors) it'll be considered a success.
