2. Downey Is Busy "Preparing" For His Role
At this stage in his career, Downey could play a role like Sherlock Holmes in his sleep. So it's no surprise to see that he seems quite excited about returning to Baker Street once more, having a bit of fun with his fans in the process.
The actor posted a GIF of his character on Twitter, striking an "arrogantly thoughtful" pose, with the caption "Practicing my Sherlock face." Check it out below:
Now yes, this is just a bit of a joke and all, but is Downey teasing his return to the role because it's going to be... quite soon?
With a Christmas 2020 release date the movie doesn't need to start shooting for another year or so, so perhaps the actor is just hinting at general prep for Sherlock Holmes 3 kicking off (finalising the script, hiring a crew, set building), rather than his own acting part in it.
