The true brilliance of Sam Raimi's new black comedy Send Help is that it isn't afraid to depict its "heroine" as less-than-savoury.

Now, Linda Liddle (Rachel McAdams) is an inherently sympathetic character for being devalued by her grossly male-dominated workplace, and when she's left stranded on a deserted island with her wounded asshole boss Bradley (Dylan O'Brien), it's tough not to relish the role reversal at play.

But as the story wears on, Linda is revealed to be a more complex and frankly unhinged character, culminating in the turning point where she takes violent action to ensure the duo aren't rescued.

Bradley's fiancée Zuri (Edyll Ismail) eventually makes it to the island with a boat captain, but having fully settled into her empowered new life on the island, Linda makes the drastic decision to push Zuri and the captain off a high cliff, killing them.

It's a tricky tonal thread to needle and yet one which Raimi makes look effortless. 

A more cautious, toothless film wouldn't have dared have Linda commit murder for risk of alienating the audience, but it ultimately sets the stage for one hell of a bonkers, all-bets-are-off finale.
