Kathryn Bigelow's taut thriller A House of Dynamite follows various members of the U.S. government as they try to intercept a nuclear missile fired at Chicago by an unknown party.

The gimmick of Bigelow's film is that it unfolds from three different perspectives, each climaxing moments before the missile is set to make impact, seemingly before the end of the story will finally reveal what actually happened.

However, the third and final segment, which follows the President of the United States (Idris Elba) as he anguishes over whether to launch a retaliatory attack, ends ambiguously without giving audiences the answers they expect.

We don't see if the missile did indeed make impact with Chicago nor whether the President launched a strike, as caused quite the backlash on social media from frustrated viewers.

This was of course entirely Bigelow and co-writer Noah Oppenheim's intent, to deny viewers the incendiary finale they likely expected, instead leaving them anxiously hanging forever more, reflecting the very uncertainty of nuclear proliferation itself.
