Sigourney Weaver: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
1. Ripley - Alien/Aliens (1979)
Despite the constant references to Sigourney Weaver's versatility outside of her reputation as a science fiction icon, there's just no getting away from the fact that Alien is still, by a country mile, the film that garnered Weaver the most critically acclaim and recognition across the globe. Alien is a film so ingrained in the history of film, critical analysis and popular culture that it barely needs any explanation or introduction. As part of a skeleton crew aboard the Nostromo in deep space, Ripley is just one of several crew members that gain the dubious honour of being the first to encounter the xenomorph species. As her crew mates are gradually dwindled down to zero, Weaver's Ripley becomes progressively courageous steel-willed in an effort to survive the xenomorph's rampage. Alien has not only been subject to analysis from an endless amount of theorists, but it also firmly established both the horror genre and the female lead as mainstream ideas. Many may argue that any female actor could have filled that role, but it's impossible to imagine anyone other than Sigourney Weaver filling such an iconic role.
