4. Viggo Mortensen - Kraven The Hunter
It would perhaps be a simple leap to cast someone like Gerard Butler to play Kraven The Hunter, given his gruff demeanour, and his form in growing luxurious facial hair - a key component of Kraven's character design, of course - but Sony should be smarter, and go with a less obvious choice. Aside from the Lord Of The Rings franchise, Mortensen's greatest critical successes have come with Eastern Promises and A History Of Violence, in which he played gangsters (albeit at direct ends of the spectrum) with considerable blood on their hands. Those two performances offer the most intriguing foundation for a potential Mortensen take on The Hunter. Rather than the catsuit wearing hunter - who might feel too much like Van Pelt from Jumanji if he was purely adapted - a modern Kraven would be more interesting as a master assassin, driven by the same desire to prove his prowess by killing Spider-Man, but with less explicit emphasis on the big game element of his backstory. Imagine Mortensen playing a cold-hearted, cool-hand killer, with the same sort of precision as A History Of Violence, and the same irresistible dark charisma as in Eastern Promises - that must surely be an appealing idea?
