Steven Soderbergh is so obsessed with the story of Che Guevara that he is set to direct two movies based on his life... back-to-back. Both movies will star
Benicio Del Toro as Guevera with a cultural cast that currently invovles Spanish actor
Javier Bardem, German actress
Franka Potente and American actor
Benjamin Bratt.
The Argentine will be the first movie shot and it invovles Che in a band of Cuban exiles under the rule of Fidel Castro who managed to gather enough support to create an army that toppelled the US-friendly regime of Fulgencio Batista back in 1956. Once shooting has finished on that movie, filming will begin straight away on
Guerrilla which will focus on Guevera travelling to New York to speak at the United Nations in 1964, where he garnered further public support. Both movies will be shot using mainly Spanish dialogue with a combined budget of $70 million given to both projects. You have to admit that casting Del Toro as Guerera is absolutely spot on, he's put in some terrific performances recently most notably in
21 Grams. I really thought he couldn't act when I saw some of his earlier work, but he has totally won me over. This project will be an interesting one to keep tabs on. source -
