Solo: A Star Wars Story - 10 Best Callbacks To The Original Saga Explained

8. "I Hate You"

Solo marks the third big-screen iteration of one of the franchise's most iconic lines.

Towards the end of the film, after Han and his team successfully survive the Kessel Run, they get out of the Millennium Falcon to see how badly it had been damaged as a result of Han's reckless but necessary flying tactics.

Among other things, part of the front of the ship had been ripped off, the cannon was gone, and the landing gear was absolutely mangled. Han attempts to nonchalantly play it off to a visibly agitated Lando, who simply says "I hate you." Han replies with "I know" before walking away.

This is, of course, a direct reference to Harrison Ford's now-legendary improvised line from The Empire Strikes Back, in which Princess Leia tells Han "I love you" and Han responds with "I know" just before he is frozen in carbonite.

The line made a comeback towards the end of Return of the Jedi, except with the roles reversed. After Leia and Han find themselves cornered by Stormtroopers during the Battle of Endor, Leia, playing possum, reveals that she has a blaster on hand and is prepared to shoot once Han moves out of the way. Han smiles and lets out a relieved "I love you" before Leia responds with "I know."

At this point, it's safe to say that Han is pretty good at reading people.
