Solo: A Star Wars Story - 10 Fan Service Moments That Will Make You Groan
1. The Kessel Run
Anyone predicting big action set pieces in Solo: A Star Wars Story would definitely have suggested that audiences would get a glimpse of one of Han's most famous feats - making the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs. That set piece dominates the middle section of the movie and is heavily foreshadowed for several previous scenes, with constant references to going to Kessel. These hints would be fine in isolation, but they are laid on so thick that it quickly becomes an exasperating experience.
On a more narrative basis, though, this obvious fan service scuppers the tension of the action sequences. Every Star Wars fan knows that Han is successfully able to make the Kessel Run and so every moment of jeopardy the film tries to create is immediately undercut by the fact the outcome is already well-known. It's a common problem in prequels and it's an issue that Solo really struggles to get past.
The Kessel Run sequence might not be a particularly egregious dose of fan service in its own right, but it drags for such an extended amount of time that it stacks an array of different nostalgic gags on top of each other, building to a section of the film that is very tough to enjoy.
