7. Which Character Worked The Best

Sonic the hedgehog
Paramount Pictures

Without a doubt the titular character of Sonic was the shining light.

His character and story feels well written and is voiced expertly (more on that in a bit).

James Marsden's Tom Wachowski as Sonic's human friend is solid enough without blowing anyone away, but at least he allows the hedgehog we've all come to see shine. The character of Tom's wife Maddie, as played by Tika Sumpter, also has her strong points, with the Tom and Maddie being a very believable married couple.

The criminal act of under utilising characters is displayed by the horrible mistreatment of Crazy Carl, a drunken man who swears he has seen Sonic around the town and has consistently tried in vein to catch "the blue devil".

Another character who is a little wasted is JoJo, Maddie's niece.

In one of the few genuinely touching scenes of the movie, JoJo gives Sonic a pair of brand new shoes for him to wear. It's a beautiful little moment acted with genuine heart by Melody Niemann, and more of her screen presence would have been a blessing.
