6. Will It Make Its Money Back?

While it's always a hard one to judge, it does seem like the movie is going to struggle to break even once publicity costs are taken into account.

Had the film opened in a more family friendly time period, then Sonic would likely have more success, but the choice of opening in the "graveyard period" of February is a strange one.

While the February time period gives the Sonic film an opening where it can hog the limelight for a week or two, it seems a poor decision considering the target audience.

It's unclear if the producers thought they had an absolute stinker on their hands, or just misjudged who the film was aimed for, but it does seem like a missed opportunity for an average - but not awful - product.

Sega will be hoping that the film will act as a loss leader as consumers purchase whatever the next chapter in Sonic video games are out there. Still, it might take a lot of sales for Sega to make their money back.
