Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer Review: 1 Up & 6 Downs

5. Jim Carrey As Dr. Robotnik

Seeing Jim Carrey on the big screen in a big-budget film getting to ham it up and chew the scenery once more sound like an absolute delight on paper. Heck, even the idea of casting him as Dr. Robotnik sounds like a bit of genuinely inspired casting in theory.

Sadly, the first glimpse this trailer offers is a sobering bit of painfully unfunny comedy that will bring those hopes and expectations screeching to a halt.

Carrey’s introduction essentially just features him playing a caricature of the kind of role he became famous for, cranked up to 11. It’s crass, loud, obnoxious, and not the least bit funny. What’s worse is that those who made the trailer clearly thought this was some sort of crowning achievement, allowing the sequence to play out practically in full, with the “basic” punchline serving as the exclamation point on nearly a quarter of the entire trailer’s runtime.

It is the kind of awful comedy that will actively delete the brain cells of its youngest viewers, and the makers of Sonic the Hedgehog thought it was good enough to include in-full in their debut trailer. Woof.
