Soul Review: 7 Ups And 3 Downs
5. Up: One Of 2020's Best Ensembles
Bizarrely, it doesn't feel like people - or even Disney itself - it talking about Soul's impressive ensemble anywhere near as much as they probably should. While Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey's names have understandably been plastered all over the movie's marketing campaign, it feels like everyone else has been ignored for the most part.
Richard Ayoade (The Mandalorian) delivers one of his best vocal performances to date, for example, while Snowpiercer star Daveed Diggs makes a big impact with a relatively minor role. Donnell Rawlings (The Wire) is also a surprising standout as Joe's barber.
Angela Bassett, Phylicia Rashad, and Alice Braga are all also excellent, but it's Rachel House's Terry who steals the show in every scene she's in.
There haven't been a huge number of movies released during 2020 for obvious reasons, but when it comes to impressive ensembles, this is one of the most exciting and diverse casts to have come along in what feels like a very long time.
