Soul Review: 7 Ups And 3 Downs
4. Up: It's An Absolute Visual Delight
Since Toy Story arrived in cinemas back in 1995, Pixar has continuously broken ground in terms of visuals. Coco was an absolute masterpiece in that respect, and while the likes of Toy Story 4 and Incredible 2 didn't push the boundaries quite as much, they're still groundbreaking in terms of technology (the hairs on the cat that torments Woody and company, for example).
Soul, meanwhile, is an absolutely beautiful movie.
Whether it's exploring the streets of Harlem, the New York Subway, or the interior of a jazz club, the movie never looks anything other than stunning. The Great Before, meanwhile, is a real mind-bender, with the soul counsellors among Pixar's weirdest, most unique creations.
It's going to be slim pickings at the Oscars next year, but it will be an injustice for Soul not to win "Best Animated Feature" as it's as a huge leap forward for the genre both in terms of the story and visuals.
