4. The Draco Misdirection

The exchange between Mr White and Bond in Austria should have got Bond fans' imaginations running wild, as the offer of divulging information on SPECTRE in exchange for protection for his daughter mimics what happens in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. In that film crime boss Draco sets Bond and his daughter up, and digs up information on SPECTRE. Like Spectre, Bond is forced to turn away from official lines of assistance when MI6 refuse him help, and he turns to criminals to help bring down Blofeld. And as a direct result, Bond gains a new love of his life, related to that criminal. Given the fact that Craig's Bond doesn't usually ride off into the sunset with a lover, this all felt suspiciously like Madeleine was going to be killed on Blofeld's orders heart-breakingly at the end. It was heavily foreshadowed, after all - including with that single bullet hole so heavily featured in the marketing - but Mendes pulled the rug out from under those expectations by having her survive.
