Spectre: 7 Most Compelling Pieces Of Evidence That Christoph Waltz Is Blofeld

5. A German-Speaker As The German-Born Blofeld

Here's a subtle slice of evidence that not many people might have picked up on, but it's another hint that Mendes and company might have chosen Christoph Waltz for a reason. In the books, the character of Ernst Stavro Blofeld was born in Imperial Germany (now Poland) in 1908. His past isn't elaborated on anywhere in the Bond movies, but his being "German" is part of his character on paper, at least. That's why Donald Pleasance appeared to be using a German-sounding accent in You Only Live Twice. Now, Waltz isn't German (he was born and raised in Vienna and identifies as Austrian through and through), but he is a German-speaker - not to mention there's the fact that most people tend to assume that he's German anyway because of his role as a Nazi in Inglourious Basterds. It's part of his persona. Is it just a coincidence that Waltz, a German-speaking actor, has been cast in the movie, when Blofeld was also German-born? Some would certainly say, "Yes, of course," but consider that the writers often go back to the books for inspiration, they might have culled this aspect of heritage for Spectre. It's just another small detail that has you wondering whether Waltz is playing us all for fools.
