Spectre: 7 Most Compelling Pieces Of Evidence That Christoph Waltz Is Blofeld

4. The Son Of Hannes Oberhauser? Why?

"Franz Oberhauser" (and his namesake) seem to have been inspired after one "Hannes Oberhauser," a relatively minor character of some importance in the James Bond books who Bond recalls during the novel Octopussy. Of Oberhauser, Bond says:
"He was a wonderful man. He was something of a father to me at a time when I happened to need one."
In more detail, Hannes Oberhauser was a ski instructor who taught Bond how to ski during holidays whilst attending Fettes College, but also became a paternal figure to him during they time spent together in Kitzbühel in the years leading up to World War II. Later, though, Oberhauser - an Austrian, don't you know? - was drafted into the Gestapo and then was later murdered in a mysterious fashion in the closing years of the war, to Bond's dismay. The most prominent theory doing that rounds at the moment seems to point to Christoph Waltz's Franz Oberhauser as the son of Hannes. Why, exactly, Franz would hate Bond and set out to destroy him is anybody's guess, but you can appreciated why this theory has also gained traction (especially given that burnt photo in the first trailer) - not to forget that Hannes was Austrian, and Waltz is Austrian, too. But it seems unlikely that such a prominent villain - arguably the one set to become the most iconic and memorable of all the rebooted, 21st century Bond bad guys - would have been inspired by a minor ski instructor character. That goes especially so when you consider that Skyfall was packed out with Bond backstory; is there even more to know? In all likelihood, this appears to be the sum of an elaborate red herring - an attempt to dupe viewers into conjuring up a storyline from bits and pieces that Mendes and Waltz are laying out for them. There are just too many convenient clues: Bond skiing in the trailer, for example. One cannot deny it's a tad convincing, but still... it still feels somewhat artificial.
