Spider-Man 2017: 10 Things Marvel Must Get Right

2. An Epic Self-Contained Movie

Given the sheer amount of movies in Marvel's Phase 3, this is the only Spider-Man film audiences are going to get for a few years. There is a danger in spending so much time linking Spidey to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe that it becomes less of a singular movie and more of an Iron Man 2 affair; the story getting lost in establishing other events taking place and set up for more to come. After The Amazing Spider-Man you really don't need Spidey films with an over-arching story. Yes, Civil War will have an impact on the stand-alone movies. You mighty see Stark Tower and maybe Iron Man himself now that his new role seems to be as a supporting player in other hero's solo outings. But the film needs to have a beginning, a middle and an end. With no origin required this can be about Spider-Man's encounter with the main villain, the epic battles that arise and the dramatic conclusion to save New York City. Add in a love story with Mary Jane Watson and the balancing of his personal life with his heroic responsibility and there is enough to keep audiences entertained. This is Marvel - and Sony's - chance to get it right, and they will have one film to do it. Sure, they can layer hints of future events to come, but not at the cost of the story itself.
